The Democratic Alliance welcomes the public apology from the North West Department of Health for administering birth control injections to learners at Pitso-Letlhogile Secondary School in Ganyesa near Vryburg.

On 20 February 2018, during a meeting between the North West Portfolio Committee and the Department of Health, the DA demanded that the department issue a public apology for unethically administering the birth control to underage learners without their consent or that of their parents.

The DA welcomes the long overdue apology which was published in The New Age on 13 March 2018, however, this apology is not adequate as it may not be accessible to parents who do not have access to the newspaper.

The DA will, therefore, write to the MEC for Health, Dr. Magome Masike, requesting him to arrange with the School Governing Body, parents, teachers and affected learners to provide a direct apology for the unethical behavior displayed by the department.

The MEC should also ensure that the same apology is made available in the local Setswana newspapers and radio stations.

The DA believes that learners have a right to be treated with integrity and we will ensure that every learner who was humiliated by this experience receives an unconditional apology from the North West Department of Health.
