The African National Congress - ANC welcomes and congratulates Professor Loyiso Nongxa on his appointment as the Vice President of the International Mathematical Union during the General Assembly in Sao Paolo, Brazil.
Founding Director of the Centre for Mathematical and Computational Sciences at the University of Witwatersrand as well the Chairperson of the South African National Research Foundation, Prof Nongxa has served in a number of leadership positions at Wits including as Vice Chancellor, Principal as well as Deputy Vice Chancellor of Research. He further served the University of the Western Cape as Professor of Mathematics and as Dean of Natural Sciences.
Professor Nongxa was the country's foremost African Rhodes Scholar to graduate from Oxford University with Mathematics in 1982.
An active participant in the transformation of higher education in South Africa, he served as chairperson of the Review Committee of the National System of Innovation as well as chaired the Research and Innovation Group of Universities of South Africa.
